About Hoot & Aboot

There’s something about the question, ‘Tell me about yourself’ that always made me uncomfortable.  For a long time, it was a static question during an interview process, so that may be why I have  diversion to it.  Or perhaps because I don’t have a dynamic backstory or exciting life that would earn the attention of anyone, but here I am.  So who am I anyway?

In a nutshell, I’m a follower of Jesus, first and foremost as that’s my primary identity.  I’m a wife to Jeff, mom to Emily and Jacob, and recently added two more kids through marriage.  I’m not really an ‘in-law’ type, so we’ve considered them full-on adopted into our family.  It’s a fun but weird season we’re in, getting to hang out with four young adults, being sandwiched between empty-nesting and pre-grandparenting. I’ve discovered over the years that as a parent, every stage you go through seems to last so long but yet goes by so quick… thus the ‘weird’ness of it all.

I met my husband Jeff when I was 12 at our church youth group.  He was an older more mature lad of 14 🙂  For the first few years, we developed an amazing friendship, spending more and more time together every year as we grew.  Six years later, we both knew something else was growing between us and decided to risk altering our friendship to see if there was anything ‘next’ for us.  And there was!  After dating for 4 years, we married and our life together began.  Hard to believe that was 29 years ago.  He’s still the love of my life and I wouldn’t trade him in for anything.

Since I was a tater-tot, I loved to create things.  I was crafty, inquisitive and an ‘I can do it myself’ kind of girl.  I would always opt (and still do!) for ‘I can make that myself’ rather than buy it.  Not because it was necessarily cheaper to do so, but because I love a challenge and I love to make things my own.   So here I am.  This blog is a reflection of who I am… sharing some practical tips and hacks to make your house a home, sharing things I’ve learned along the way for the budget-friendly diy’er, and on occasion, random ramblings from someone who has been through the muck and the mire, who sometimes visits there and is sometimes thrown in there.  But every time, is rescued out of it to live a life transformed.

So why ‘Hoot & Aboot’?  I have an affinity for owls.  They’re just amazing creatures, cute, stealth, weird and quiet.  The fact they can turn their heads 270 degrees is impressive. What’s not to like?  The ‘aboot’ is a tip-of-the-hat to my Canadian-ness.  It’s something we don’t really notice that we say, but non-Canuks are quick to point out… that and the ‘eh’, (but unless you’re a true Canadian, it’s always used wrong, so please don’t try 🙂   So welcome to Hoot & Aboot.  Hope you stay awhile.
