Stop Buying Laundry Soap!

Stop Buying Laundry Soap!

I didn’t believe it was possible to MAKE your own laundry soap that was just as good as the fancy stuff you buy in the store… and the better part is that it’s literally a small fraction of the cost. After sampling different soap recipes, I found the one that works the best, and works even better than top brand name soap. With just a few simple items, you can make 5 gallons of liquid laundry soap for less than $5. Let’s keep it simple… here’s what you need:

  • 1 Cup Borax
  • 1 Cup Washing Soda (NOT baking soda… there’s a huge difference!)
  • 1 Laundry Soap Bar
  • 1 Cup Oxy Clean
  • 5 Gallon Bucket with Lid
  • Water
  • Grater
  • Essential Oil (optional)

Let’s get to it!

Super Washing Soda is NOT the same thing as Baking Soda.  You can find this in hardware stores and some groceries stores.

You’ll need a 5 gallon bucket with a lid.  I purchased this one for about $7, but you can find these anywhere.  If you get a used one, make sure it’s well washed out before you begin.

Put 4 cups of water into a medium sized pot and start heating the water on the stove.  Using a grater, grate the entire bar of laundry soap.  Add the grated soap to the pot of water and heat until all the soap is melted.  Be sure to stir regularly.

While the soap is melting on the stove, fill the 5 gallon bucket halfway with hot tap water.  I put mine in my kitchen sink, but be mindful that the bucket will be very heavy once it’s filled all the way, so keep in mind you’ll need to lift it out of the sink.  So either have some muscle nearby to help you or use the bathtub to make it easier.

Add 1 cup of Borax, 1 cup of Washing Soda and 1 cup of Oxy Clean to the bucket and stir to dissolve.

Once all the soap is melted, add it to the bucket and stir it in to combine it with the other cleaners.  Fill the rest of the bucket with hot tap water.  Only fill the bucket to the bottom of the rungs on the bucket because the contents will expand!  Now move the bucket to sit overnight.  If you want to add some essential oil for scent, now is the time!  Give it a good stir one more time and put the lid on.  Leave it overnight.

The next day, you’ll find your mixture to look gloopy.  Don’t worry!  That’s how it’s supposed to look.  I just use it as it is, adding this as I would any liquid laundry soap, so follow your washing machine guides.  If you want a smoother texture, you can use an immersion blender to blend it smooth.

For more convenience, you can transfer your new laundry soap into smaller containers.  Now go do some laundry and brag to all your friends about how you pay $5 a year for laundry soap.  🙂
